Major Franciszek Żukowski, Honored Polish Soldier, Remembered in Cardiff with Memorial Fundraiser

Major Franciszek Żukowski, a decorated officer of the Polish Army, passed away in 1966, leaving a lasting legacy of courage and dedication to his country. He is remembered fondly by the Polish community in Cardiff, where he had lived after emigrating from Poland following World War II.

Major Żukowski was a recipient of the prestigious Virtuti Militari and three-time awardee of the Cross of Valour. Despite his heroism and contributions, his grave in Western Cemetery, Cardiff, has remained marked by a deteriorating wooden cross for nearly 60 years. The wooden marker, which has significantly deteriorated over the years, was a symbol of the struggles faced by Polish soldiers living in exile after the war.

A fundraiser has been organized to ensure that Major Żukowski’s final resting place receives a proper memorial. The goal is to raise £2,000 to replace the wooden cross with a durable stone monument, preserving the memory of this brave soldier for future generations.

"Each donation is a tribute to Major Żukowski's service and the Polish community’s deep respect for his sacrifices," shared Tomasz Madrzyk, the organizer of the fundraiser.

The fundraiser has already raised £575 towards the goal, and the Polish Catholic Mission in Cardiff is supporting the initiative. Friends, family, and the community continue to honor his memory, ensuring that Major Żukowski’s legacy remains strong.
